I began this drawing as a demonstration for my portrait drawing class, then finished it later from a photograph. You can see me drawing the initial block-in below. I've also posted a photo of Brittney grinning. I wish I could have included her sunny grin in the drawing. But even Brittney, as good as she is at sitting still, simply couldn't sustain a grin during the entire demo.

I painted this portrait using a limited palette of Yellow Ochre, Terra Rosa, Ivory Black and Titanium White. The canvas was toned a neutral gray and I used Burnt Umber for the block in.

As I've explained here before, these earthy versions of the primary colors are nearly the same as those
used by Swedish painter Anders Leonard Zorn (1860-1920). But, instead
of Terra Rosa, Zorn used Vermillion (or modern-day Cadmium
Red). Other earthy reds like Venetian Red, English Red Light or
Light Red Oxide work well, too.

Using this limited palette has its benefits. The muted color scheme creates
color harmony and unity with no effort at all. It's also a good teaching
tool, because beginning students can learn how to manipulate oil paint
without the concern for exact color-matching. The subdued tones also
help students recognize complimentary colors and strengthen their
understanding of the color wheel.

I began this painting from life along with my portrait drawing class, then finished it from a photograph. You can see it in the beginning stages, along with a few students and our lovely model Brittney, in the photo posted below.
If you live in North Carolina, then you're familiar with Pilot Mountain, which is located near Andy Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy. In his TV show of the 1960s, the fictional town of "Mount Pilot" (obviously a composite of the two names) was mentioned in several episodes. Speaking of the Andy Griffith show, if you haven't seen my interview of actress Betty Lynn, who played Barney's girlfriend Thelma Lou on the show, check it out on YouTube.

I painted this view of Pilot Mountain from the Jomeokee Park campground. Each year they sponsor a Marine Mud Run and that's the finish line mud pit, below the mountain.

Here are a few photos of me and my plein air painting buddies at the campground. As you can see, I was protected from the sun under a picnic shelter. Inspirational views were everywhere! I'll have to visit again!
Earlier this summer a Triad Outdoor Painters (TOP) member invited us to do some painting on her property out in the country. The vast land around her home was beautifully landscaped (mostly by her husband) and yet, this rusty old water tower is what caught my eye. The slightly neglected bocce court was in her yard and harmonized nicely with the tower which was located across the street.

Last weekend I joined other Triad Outdoor Painters (TOP) members for some plein air painting at the historic Reynolds Homestead in Virginia. We were there to kick off a TOP exhibition which will be on display until August 23. I have six pieces in the exhibition. As a subject, that day, I chose this beautiful, old Southern Catawba tree. I just love the shape of it and the gnarled trunk!

Below are some photos taken that day. In the first one, I'm on the far left, beside a mailbox and hidden behind leaves of the tree I'm under. It was threatening rain the whole time we were there, so I wanted to be at least partially protected. It did finally rain towards the end, so the precaution paid off. In the other two photos you can see my view of the Homestead. TOP members were "staked out" throughout the site, though. About eight of us in all.

This painting started as a demo for my oil painting class. The red cloth is a curtain I found at a local thrift store. It's a really thick material and I love the way it drapes down and then wraps around the corner of the table. The folds are just so interesting to me - and were fun to paint.

I started this painting during a paint out sponsored by the PAINTNC group based in Raleigh, NC. That day I only had enough time to establish a rough block-in, so I made a couple more trips to Old Salem to complete it. Old Salem is located in Winston-Salem, which is about a 30 minute drive for me. It was originally founded in 1766 and the subject of this painting, Winkler Bakery, was constructed in 1800 and restored in 1968 with an 1818 rear porch. That's the rear porch you see in the painting. There are so many beautiful historic buildings in Old Salem - I just might have to visit again!

The photo below was taken during the paint out and shows me working on the initial block-in.

I began this painting as a demo for my students and used a limited palette of Yellow Ochre, Terra Rosa, Ivory Black and Titanium White. The canvas was toned with Raw Umber.

These earthy versions of the primary colors are nearly the same as those used by Swedish painter Anders Leonard Zorn (1860-1920). But, instead of Terra Rosa, the Zorn palette uses Vermillion (or modern-day Cadmium Red Light). Other earthy reds like Venetian Red, English Red Light or Light Red Oxide work well, too.

Using the Zorn palette has its benefits. The muted color scheme creates color harmony and unity with no effort at all. It's also a good teaching tool, because beginning students can learn how to manipulate oil paint without the concern for exact color-matching. The subdued tones also help students recognize complimentary colors and strengthen their understanding of the color wheel.

Ivory Black is cool and stands in for blue. So in this painting, for example, the small pitcher on the left was blue, so I used Ivory Black to paint it. Mixing Ivory Black with Yellow Ochre results in an nice, earthy, sort of olive green. But, as a final step for this painting, I decided to brighten up the yellow-green apples with a thin glaze of Viridian mixed with Cadmium Yellow. Below is a shot of the painting before the glaze was added.
Here's another portrait drawing from over the holidays. Working with charcoal and white charcoal on toned paper is new for me and I really like the look. Back in the studio for some still life painting. Actually, I painted this one in the classroom alongside my oil painting students. The biggest challenge for everyone was achieving the look and feel of lace without going overboard on every last detail. The best solution I could come up with was to paint in big shapes first and then selectively add a few smaller darks and highlights where they were needed. The time-tested method of "squinting" helped me see those big shapes and also helped me decide which details to include - and which to leave out.

I just returned from a short visit to Ocean Isle Beach. This time of year the water is too cold to go swimming in, for my taste, so I completed a painting "en plein air" instead. I painted from the far east end of Ocean Isle Beach and that strip of green in the distance is Holden Beach.

In the photo of my setup, below, you can tell better that the two beaches are actually divided by a sound. I almost changed my vantage point to paint that sound, but the wet sand which remained from high tide was so interesting - and also served as a good "lead in" to the scene. What you can't tell from the photo is what a windy day it was. Several times I had to stop my easel from blowing over and even a few paint brushes took off flying!

I can't believe how quickly this summer is flying by! I've been busy with some illustration projects and haven't had time to do much painting outside. But, I just met up with a group of plein air painters at the Horne Creek Living Historical Farm which is located near Pilot Mountain. The farm is a North Carolina State Historic site and serves as an outdoor museum dedicated to the state's rural and agricultural heritage, circa 1900-1910.

It was a hot day but I found a nice shady spot to paint from. The photo below shows my set up. That's my easel in the center, behind the woodpile. My subject is to the left and you can see part of a farmhouse to the right. That farmhouse was built in the 1870's and I considered choosing it as my subject, but felt that a large format painting would do it better justice. My painting buddies and I agreed that there was so much on that farm that would make a great painting! So I hope to go back again someday.

This is the second and final painting that I completed for the community project, "BEHIND THE SEEN: Encounters with the Contemporary Family." The young boy is named, Collin, and his challenging behavior often takes center stage in his family. So, I've attempted to depict that dynamic through poses and composition.

There are a few things about this painting that are similar to, "Loving Sara," which is the other painting that I created for this project. First of all, because of this painting's design and subject matter, I used photo reference to complete it. Also, just like in the other painting, I've tried to convey Collin's animated and energetic personality through the way I applied paint to the canvas. Another similarity is that I've painted Collin twice to represent the two aspects of his behavior.

Both paintings are pictured below in the exhibition's current location at Holly Hill Mall in Burlington, NC. The exhibition features the work of 16 artists and will travel across North Carolina through May, 2013.

I completed this painting for a community project entitled, "BEHIND THE SEEN: Encounters with the Contemporary Family," which is using art and film as a medium to spread awareness and provide insight into the uniqueness of families with young children experiencing emotional and behavioral challenges. The exhibition will travel across North Carolina through May, 2013 and will host discussions and activities in each location. It's at Holly Hill Mall in Burlington, NC until the end of this month. For info about future locations visit www.BehindTheSeenArt.com. The trailer for a documentary about the project can be viewed at: http://vimeo.com/37288629.

The project brought
together four Alamance County families and 16 artists. Each artist has had a few months to spend time with a family and then create a work of art based on insights garnered during that time. I worked with two families and so created another painting, as well. I'll share that one in a future post.

Sara's personality is animated and full of energy and I tried to convey that through poses and through the way I applied paint to the canvas. I painted her twice to represent the two aspects of her behavior.

Sara's mother has chosen to look past the inappropriate side of Sara's behavior, and instead, nurtures the more appropriate and positive aspects. I feel that affirming appropriate behavior, in this way, is essential. It is my hope that everyone, if confronted with a young child who has behavioral challenges, will make a similar choice and see that child through this loving mother's eyes.

Because of this painting's design and subject matter, I used photo reference in conjunction with a color study from life. A few images of the painting in progress are posted below. The grid that is partially painted on the canvas helped me get major shapes in the correct position. Once they were established, I then painted the same way I would from life.

Thicker paint was also applied on the highlight area of the orange with a small, round bristle brush.

This painting received an Honorable Mention award at the Cary Gallery of Artists, Fourth Annual Small Treasures Juried Show. North Carolina artist, Mary Rountree Moore was the juror.

When I began this plein air painting, the ceramic chickens were what appealed to me the most. But they turned out to be such a small part of the composition and my attention quickly turned to the red smokehouse. The irregularity of its clapboards became very interesting. And, yes, you might recognize this as the same smokehouse that I've painted before at my great-aunt Armin's farm.
Here's another portrait sketch from life that I painted using a full color accurate block-in. The TV that Amber wanted on, while she posed, must have influenced the "noisy" way I painted this background.

Below is a photo that her mother took of the painting in progress. Amber sure looks bored, but considering that she's only ten, she endured the ordeal quite well!
Here's another still life that was painted using a full color accurate block-in. It's a method I'm beginning to warm up to, so I'm going to stick with it for a while.

I enjoyed painting the cloth with thicker paint and visible brush strokes, which I feel contrasts well with the smoothness of the bottle and other objects. The reflections of red and yellow in those objects were a delight to paint, too. They really were this bright, for the most part - something I probably wouldn't have seen if working from a photo.

Someone suggested, "Huddled Glasses," for a title. But, the colors are really warm and the apple seems protected by the others, so I opted for "Safe and Snug."
It was completed in about 5 hours. That doesn't include the breaks the model took every 20 minutes or so. This sitting still for a portrait stuff ain't easy - especially for a 12 year old!

Instead of beginning this still life painting with my usual preliminary line drawing, I approached it the same way I did my plein air paintings of this past summer - using a full color accurate block-in. For a description of this type of block-in, see Issue 10 of the ArtistChronicle eNewsletter. I just finished a portrait sketch in oils using the same approach. I'll share that with you in an upcoming post.
